The Truman Scholarship provides up to $30,000 in funding to students pursuing graduate degrees in public service fields. Students must be college juniors at the time of selection. The Foundation also provides assistance with career counseling, internship placement, graduate school admissions, and professional development. Scholars are invited to participate in a number of programs: Truman Scholar Leadership Week, The Summer Institute, The Truman Fellows Program, and the Public Service Law Conference. Truman Scholars are required to work in public service for three of the seven years following completion of a Foundation-funded graduate degree program as a condition of receiving Truman funds.
Third-years who intend on pursuing graduate school and a career in public service. Applicants must be US citizens. The College may nominate up to four applicants. There is no strict GPA requirement, although evidence of academic success is valued.
Students must be nominated by the University of Chicago to apply for this award. The University may nominate four students to move forward to the National Competition.
Please complete the Truman Scholarship Primer by Sunday, October 15 and schedule a meeting with Nicholas Morris to discuss the next steps. The primer is a non-binding, brainstorming tool used to help in the application advising process. Students will be asked to outline a rough sketch of their: issue that drives their interest in public service, most significant leadership experience, satisfying public service activity, and potential graduate school. A paragraph or two on each will be sufficient for the primer. Additionally, students will be asked to identify potential letter of recommendation writers and attach a CV/Resume.
In order to be nominated by the University, students must submit a complete Truman Scholarship Campus Application by 11:59pm on Tuesday, November 21, 2017. Applications are submitted through the Truman Scholarship Portal (students must register through the CCSA). The complete Campus Application includes:
- Truman Scholarship Application
- Policy proposal
- Three letters of recommendation
- Each letter of recommendation is written specifically to one of: career in Public Service, example of Leadership, or evidence of continued Academic Success
- Transcripts (unofficial are OK)
