Hertz Foundation Graduate Fellowship

Funds graduate study in the applied physical sciences, including mathematics and quantitative biology.

Hertz Foundation Fellowships support the full cost of graduate education in selected scientific fields at more than 40 institutions. The Fellowship includes a stipend of up to $32,000 per academic year and is renewable. The Foundation emphasizes applied sciences and mathematics.

Should an applicant be offered a Graduate Fellowship by the Hertz Foundation, she or he must formally accept it before commencing its tenure. This acceptance includes a statement that the Fellow makes a moral commitment to make his or her "skills available to the United States in times of national emergency."

Eligibility Requirements

Fourth-year college students and graduate students who are US citizens or permanent residents are eligible to apply. Applicants must be in the applied physical, biological, or engineering sciences and intending to study at one of the participating universities.

Application Process

Applications are made directly via the Hertz Foundation web site.  In addition to the application form, applicants will submit transcripts, "reference reports" from four college instructors or research supervisors, and GRE Scores.

Students who progress in the competition will participate in two interviews (one of which is technical).

University of Chicago undergraduates should work closely with faculty and also speak with a College scholarships adviser prior to applying.
